The aim of the study course is to promote students' understanding of cartographic activities, map visualization. The objectives of the course is (1) to teach students the concepts, principles and techniques related to maps and map making. (2)It is expected that students will develop knowledge and competence in map types, data selection, compilation, map design, mapping tools and production techniques, visualization, as well as cartographic communication. Language of course teaching: English, Latvian.

Results Knowledge: 1. where and how to obtain data for cartographic activities; 2. how to perform data selection, sorting and visualization; 3. how to generalize the data according to the reduced map scales; Skills: 4. create map layouts; 5. mark maps using cartographic placement methods; 6. select symbols and colors to adequately represent geospatial data; 7. to design the content of the basic map that supports the interpretation of the data, 8. to prepare a legend for a map of a certain topic; 9. Identify specific card design requirements based on user needs and create a product that meets user goals. Competence: 10. Knows the computer programs that are used in the production of maps in the modern cartographic workflow; 11. Understands the design theory that applies to map creation and the application of these theories in the whole map creation process; 12. Is able to make proposals for the creation and design of various maps with arguments.
